TROY DAVIS: What Are They Fighting For?
Yesterday, Sept 21 2011, Troy Davis, a 43 year old African American man was executed by The State of Georgia for allegedly murdering a White police officer several years ago.
The public has been largely divided over the execution of Troy Davis. One side believes that he is guilty and has been proven guilty by a 'jury of his peers' beyond a 'reasonable doubt.' Despite the fact that there was no ballistic evidence, nor was there physical evidence of his presence at the crime scene, 9 witnesses came forward identifying Mr. Davis. Now, several years later and just before his death, 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted their stories with a few claiming to have been coerced by police officers.
Needless to say, Troy Davis was executed despite the discovery of evidence that suggested he was innocent. In addition to retracted witness testimony, Troy has proclaimed his innocence throughout his 20 years of incarceration. There is evidence of his innocence. There is evidence of his guilt. So what are people TRULY fighting for? THe death of a suspected killer, or the exoneration of an innocent man who is about to be murdered?
Thousands of people have demanded a review of the case and the system has ignored them. I don't know who Troy Davis is or whether or not he's innocent. But I do know this:
I protest in favor of TROY DAVIS but I am NOT defending a KILLER. I believe in holding the system accountable for at LEAST taking the time to investigate claims of innocence and evidence of innocence before TAKING A LIFE!
Black men in particular need to pay attention to this shit. They can't afford COUNSEL, they can't afford BAIL and they aint gettin' hired. They are just a missed job and witness account away from being murdered by the State they live in. THAT'S REAL muthaFUGGIN talk! SHout out to the young and educated, who aint afraid of sh*t!
